Debate is an important co-curricular activity at King’s College, Budo, helping students develop confidence, critical thinking, research, public speaking and leadership skills. The school has a proud history of competitive debating and continues to participate in major national and international academic competitions.
The Debate Club is proudly supported by its patron, Mrs. Nsereko Aidah Katana, whose guidance and commitment contribute to the development of the students’ debating abilities and the continued growth of the club. Budo has enjoyed notable success in recent competitions, including winning the overall Junior Award at the JOZI SHO Summer Open 2025, an African Schools Debate Championship held at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. The club has also continued to build on Budo’s long-standing national debating tradition, with students representing the College in major debate and public-speaking competitions.
In 2026, the Budo Debate Club participated in the World Scholar’s Cup Kampala Round, held at Acorns International School, Lubowa. The competition brought together more than 100 teams from international and traditional schools. Budo students performed exceptionally well, returning with an impressive 6 overall trophies and 12 individual merit trophies. Their performance also earned them qualification for the Global Round in Thailand.
The 2026 results also show Budo students achieving recognition in the Debate Champions categories, with several Budonians featuring among the leading individual performers in both the junior and senior divisions. Budo also fielded several successful debate teams during the competition.
These achievements add to Budo’s strong debating tradition, including its National Schools Debate Championship victory in 2010 and its return to the national senior title in 2025. The continued success of the Debate Club demonstrates the school’s commitment to nurturing articulate, confident and thoughtful students who can engage constructively with issues affecting their communities, country and the wider world.
