History and Evolution of ICT at Kings College Budo

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at Kings College Budo has grown from humble beginnings into a comprehensive digital ecosystem that supports teaching, administration, and student welfare. This transformation has been guided by visionary leadership, dedicated staff, and a committed ICT team.

The journey of ICT at Kings College Budo began with Mr. Kasamba Godfrey, Deputy Head Teacher, who first introduced ICT to the school. At that time, he was the only staff member skilled in typing, teaching, and empowering others with digital skills. His early work laid the foundation for ICT growth in the school.

In 2004, MTN Uganda installed a major internet backbone at Kings College Budo. Initially, the network was barely utilized: learners could access the internet on only one computer in Lab 1 at a speed of 7 Mbps.

It was only after the return of Mr. Kasamba Godfrey and Mr. John Fred Kazibwe as Deputy Head Teacher and Head Teacher, respectively, that ICT development gained real momentum. With strong support from the school administration and the Chairman of the Board (then Chair of the PTA), Mr. Gim Rogers Katende, the internet infrastructure was expanded. Today, over 200 computers in the labs enjoy 500 Mbps internet on fibre, enabling students and staff to work efficiently and access online resources without interruption.

Between 2022 and 2026, further expansion of internet infrastructure took place under the consistent guidance of Mr. Kasamba Godfrey and Mr. John Fred Kazibwe. As Chair of the ICT Committee, I, Mr. Omony Fred, was tasked with strengthening these initiatives. Working with a dedicated team—including Joseph Jemba, Kibuuka Hellen, Nduwayo Ronald, and Ocen Emmanuel—we ensured the MTN network backbone was fully utilized.

Under the leadership of Mr. John Fred Kazibwe, the ICT Committee developed several in-house software solutions with guidance from Deputy Head Teachers Mr. Kasamba Godfrey, Mr. Atwine Godfrey, Mrs. Alice Kadu Galiwango, and Mr. Kizito Godfrey, Director of Studies. These include:

• In-house Report Card System – improving efficiency in student assessment reporting
• Lesson Plan and Scheme of Work System – supporting teachers in planning and teaching, developed with guidance from Mr. Kizito Godfrey
• Biometric Attendance System – capturing accurate attendance data
• Electronic Store and Inventory Management System – monitoring stock movement and supplies
• Electronic Voting System – facilitating transparent school elections
• Sick Bay Management System – connecting the girls’ and boys’ sick bays to the school network, developed with help from school parents, doctors, and the ICT Committee

Other infrastructures

1.     Digital notice board

2.     Replacement of black board with Interactive board

3.     Introduction of intrusion detection system on sensitive offices and laboratory

4.     Introduction of digital Acess control instead of manual padlocks

5.     Digitizing library using coha system

Each system was implemented with continuous advice and motivation from Mr. Kasamba Godfrey, Mr. Atwine Godfrey, Mrs. Alice Kadu Galiwango, and introduction of Mr. John Fred Kazibwe, ensuring the systems meet the school’s operational and educational needs.

Currently, the ICT Committee, encouraged by Mr. Kazibwe, is working on a cashless transaction system to enhance security and reduce theft. The journey of digital transformation at Kings College Budo is ongoing, with many more initiatives planned by Deputy Head Teachers and the ICT leadership team.

The evolution of ICT at Kings College Budo demonstrates the power of collaboration, consistent guidance, and visionary leadership. From one computer at 7 Mbps to over 200 computers at 500 Mbps fibre internet, ICT continues to transform teaching, learning, and administration at the school.
